What is Trigger Point Massage?
Trigger Point Therapy uses intense and direct pressure on specific areas of painful and dysfunctional muscles to relieve pain and impairment.
Hyper-stimulated areas in a dysfunctional muscle can create localized symptoms or refer symptoms to other muscles. Trigger Point Therapy relieves symptoms at both levels.
Pioneered by Dr. Janet Travell, Trigger Point Therapy has long been used by physicians, dentists, physical therapists and massage therapists to create long term pain relief.
Trigger Point Therapy requires verbal communication by you, the client, with your massage therapist. They will need to gauge the location of your pain and your exact level of discomfort while you are receiving the work. Your massage therapist will ask you to describe your pain on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being no feeling of pain and 10 being extreme pain. As the massage therapist applies pressure to the painful point, you will experience a change in sensation. After a few seconds, they will again ask you to describe your level of pain.
Clients are often surprised by the level of relief they experience after this technique. It is important to understand that this technique can be intense. It is intended to create pain relief, not immediate relaxation. You should experience no after effects of soreness or additional pain after this technique is performed.
Trigger Point Therapy is always performed after your muscles have been sufficiently warmed by either massage therapy or the application of heat packs. It can be used as a part of Deep Tissue Massage Therapy or Neuromuscular Therapy.
